Team Handbook

The Quechee Otters Swim Team

The Quechee Otters Swim Team is a recreational team welcoming swimmers ages 5-18 from The Quechee Club, Town of Hartford and surrounding areas. It is a 6-7 week program designed to improve technique and efficiency in swimming. We also focus on fun and a love for the sport.

Objectives:

Swimmers will:

  • Learn and improve competitive swim strokes through instruction, drills and practice.
  • Develop a sense of respect, cooperation, self-discipline, sportsmanship and fitness through regular participation at practices and meets.
  • Learn the value of teamwork and pride of accomplishment.
  • Participate in a fun, safe and diverse practice environment.
  • Participate in swim meets.

Prerequisites:

  • Swimmers 10 and under must be able to swim 25 yards freestyle (front crawl) and 25 yards backstroke without stopping. 25 yards is one length of the pool.
  • Swimmers 11 and up must be able to swim 50 yards freestyle and 50 yards backstroke without stopping, as well as demonstrate a knowledge of breaststroke and butterfly.

Practices:

  • Swimmers are expected to participate in a minimum of 3 practices per week.
  • Swimmers are expected to arrive on time and prepared to be in the pool at the start of each practice.

Equipment Needed: Practices and Meets

  • Appropriate swimsuit for practice, please reserve the team suit for meets only.
  • Goggles, at least 2 pair (you never know when they will break or get lost).
  • Swim cap
  • Towels
  • Water Bottle
  • Warm clothes to change into
  • Healthy Snacks, NO NUTS as we have swimmers with allergies.

Meets:

  • Swimmers are expected to participate in at least 2 regular season meets.
  • All swimmers can compete in all regular season meets.
  • All swimmers will be encouraged to compete in Invitational Meets, the SVSL Championship meet and the VSA State meet, if they meet the qualifying time standards.
  • Swimmers can swim up to 4 individual events and 2 relays (1 medley and 1 free)
  • Swimmers can ask to be entered into a specific event; however, Coaches will have the final decision.
  • Relays require 4 swimmers in an age group. Coaches will select swimmers for relays. 100 or 200 Medley Relay is made up of each competitive stroke in this order: Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Freestyle. Each swimmer will swim 25 or 50 yards of one stroke. 100 or 200 Free Relay has each swimmer swimming 25 or 50 yards Freestyle. The Free Relays are typically at the end of each meet.

SVSL Championship Meet: This meet is our league final meet. Typically held the last Saturday of July at Whites Memorial Pool, Rutland, VT. Swimmers must have participated in at least 2 regular season meets to qualify for SVSL Champs.

THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.

VSA State Meet: This meet is held at UVAC in White River Junction, VT. Swimmers MUST have competed in at least 3 regular season meets. This includes the SVSL Championship meet. Swimmers also MUST meet the qualifying time standards set by the VSA Competition Committee. VSA Time Standards will be posted on the website when they are available.

THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.

Parent Involvement:

  • Parents are expected to help and support the team.
  • Parents are expected to volunteer at home and away meets.

  • Training will be made available.

Set-up, Clean-up, Timers, Stroke and Turn Officials, Runners,

Bull Pen and Computer Assist.

Please note, meets require many people to run the meet successfully. Swim meets, either home or away, are NOT a drop off event.

Communication:

Most communication will come from the Team Manager Susan Carey, while some will come from the Coaches. Any questions that the Coaches are unable to answer, please contact the Team Manager. We will use the [email protected] as our primary method, we will also use the website as a method of communication as well.

Cost:

$200 per child/season includes: Coaching fees, meet entry fees, website maintenance, a team t-shirt and swim cap.

Code of Conduct

Swimmers will treat coaches and each other with respect and kindness.

Inappropriate or unkind behavior will not be tolerated.

Swimmers will demonstrate excellent sportsmanship.

Swimmers will congratulate each other and opposing teams.

All equipment owned and operated by The Quechee Otters Swim Team will be used only during practices and swim meets.  This includes but is not limited to the following listed items:  Swim fins, kick boards, pull buoys and starting blocks
